What: Cornerstone is a church funded community support project in the West End of Newcastle. It provides a range of formal and informal activities. This volunteering opportunity is with a befriending service to adults with a learning disability. The aim is to encourage the group to become active and involved in their local community and identify and develop strategies to overcome barriers to their participation. Support the group to learn skills to run their own social club and expand their social lives help the club committee to plan and organise their social and learning activities both in the local area and attractions and events outside the area.
The Volunteer Role: We are looking for volunteers to support the group of adults with learning disabilities run their social club. The millennium club meet monthly and enjoy a range of activities. Sometimes club members spend an evening at Cornerstone doing activities such as drama, bingo, pie and pea supper or a bbq. Other times the group go bowling, enjoy a day at Beamish Museum or a trip to South Shields, the pub visit being a favourite.
We need volunteers who are reliable, committed and enjoy helping to develop the skills and abilities of the group. Volunteers need to be flexible, empathetic, sensitive to the needs of others and have a good sense of fun. We also ask that volunteers are able to commit to the second Wednesday evening of each month and an occasional Saturday.
Experiences/skills/training: When you choose to volunteer with us at the Welcome Project you will be offered the chance to support and help to develop the social skills of a group of adults with learning disabilities. Within your role there is the opportunity to build on existing or develop new skills and career opportunities. You will be joining a fun group of volunteers and club members and your time and energy will be greatly appreciated by us all. We can provide references, out of pocket expenses and a very unique and interesting volunteering opportunity with the potential for lots of fun.
