The Courier is a part of your routine at university - every Monday you'll inevitably find yourself picking up a copy at the Union or one of the many places across campus it's available. The best thing about The Courier is that it's made FOR you BY you. I started off as a sports writer in my first year at university and now after three years my first full-time job after graduating is producing the paper that played such a big part in my student life!
Volunteering for The Courier is great experience whether you're thinking of going into journalism or not - it adds value to your CV, teaches you lots of skills that your degree can't and is fun too! There's all sorts you can do to help - from sports reports, gig reviews, photography and even design. My office is opposite the Cochrane Lounge so pop in whenever you're around if you fancy getting involved.
For the past four years The Courier has had a sister entertainments pull-out called Pulp which provides you with the ultimate student guide to what to do and when to do it throughout the year. This year The Courier's website is also being launched (check out www.couriernewcastle.com) where you can catch up with news as it happens and much more.
The Courier will be celebrating its 60th birthday in 2008 and is going from strength to strength with a current readership of 12,000. So make sure you pick up your free copy every week and if you fancy becoming the next Piers Morgan (well, ok maybe not him...) then don't hesitate to get in touch.
My job doesn't just include the paper. I play a part in making the Union as good as possible for the students. When I'm not in important meetings (honest...) you might see me around in Freshers' and RAG Week!
