School Representatives

These student reps make up the largest student representation within the union. Their role is essential to inform the union of student opinion and consequently guiding its policies.

Every school has one or more school representative; there are 48 places in total. Anything you or your mates have complained about - your course, the university, the union or even the government can be brought to Union Council. It is a brilliant opportunity to get involved with student life on a whole new level. You get to make positive changes to the union whilst meeting new people and enhancing your CV, employers will love the evidence of public speaking, decision making, constructive arguing etc.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in then here is a quick summary of what to do.....

  • Pick up a purple election form from the general office (2nd floor of the union building)
  • Get nominated by 12 from students on your course (they just need to sign the form!)
  • If more people run than there are positions available within your school you will have to run in an election.
  • You have to campaign for your position... sell yourself to the rest of the campus, tell them why you would be the best representative for them.
  • On Election Day the ballot boxes will be open for 4 hours in your school building. You will need as many people to vote for you as possible!
  • Then it is simply whoever has the most votes is elected.
  • If you have no opposition then you are automatically elected (providing no one appeals against this decision!!)

Once you are elected you will have a seat (and a vote) on Union Council. This takes place once a month at the Union. It's helpful to talk to other students as much as possible identify any issues you can bring up at council... it makes it a lot more interesting if you have something to say.

For anymore information please feel free to drop in and see the Democracy and Training Officer on the 1st floor of the Union building, email on democracy.union@ncl.ac.uk or  ring on 0191 239 3963
