Description: Shell Step is a dynamic work placement Programme dedicated to providing challenging projects for ambitious undergraduates to undertake in small and medium-sized businesses, community organisations and social enterprises. Various companies based across Tyne and Wear, Durham and Northumberland are looking for students to undertake a wide variety of projects which are listed below.
Requirements: To apply for one of these placements you must be a second or penultimate year undergraduate; Shell Step is not open to part time or temporary exchange students, postgraduate, first or final year students.
Hours of work: 35 hours/week
Start date: 23 June Contract: 8 weeks
Rate of pay: £200 per week (exempt from tax and National Insurance contributions)

5310 – WEBSITE REBRANDING
This company would like a student to undertake a website rebranding project to bring their existing website in line with the new company branding using PHP and SQL. This would require the student to: research site layouts, design suitable options, build the site, test the site and optimise the search engine. The site must be completely functional by the end of the 8 weeks.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a computer science degree with knowledge of PHP5, SQL, Java Script, CSS, XHTML, Adobe Photoshop. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.

5311 – GRAPHIC DESIGN PROJECT
This company would like a student to work on designs for between 2-4 new craft supply products. The product would either be a set of decorative papers or card toppers, typically with floral borders and designs. These must be complete by the end of the 8 weeks, and they will be advertised for sale on the company's website and in the 350+ stores which stock the company's product range.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a design related degree with a good working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

5312 – CONTENT MANAGED BASED WEBSITE TEMPLATE PROJECT
This company would like a student to complete a web development project to create a template content management based web system. The stages will include: Identify the company's needs, develop template designs for the Creative Director to choose from, develop the content management system, carry out tests on the system.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a computer science or multi media design degree with a viewable portfolio, and preferably have knowledge of PHP and MYSQL. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.

5313 – FOOD BRANDING FEASABILITY STUDY
This company would like a student to develop a food brand utilising local and, where possible, Estate raw materials for a profit, and for a positive Community influence. The brand and product portfolio need to give the consumer what they want whilst majoring on regionally produced raw materials. Production will be licensed out to approved manufacturers, with a permanent eye being kept on costs.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a Food Marketing/
Agri-Business degree. Own transport is essential. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential.

5314 – VIDEO FOOTAGE ARCHIVING PROJECT
This company is looking to roll out a new service offering video footage online in a similar nature to photo libraries. The student would be required to design the structure of the electronic archive and catalogue the video footage. It would also include the spec up of a firewall and writing a design spect, and testing. If you do not have your own transport, this company is willing to pick you up from a metro station along the coast.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a IT or Media Production degree with working knowledge of Adobe Premier, bridge and other CS3 creative suite products. Good self-initiative, communication and IT skills are essential.

5329 – MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS PROJECT
This company is wanting someone to review their Bill of Materials structure and set up by liaising with the various people internally and externally. New part codes (raw materials, sub assemblies and finished goods) will need to be set up and bill of materials need to be produced including costs. The current BOMs are over complicated as well as being incomplete so modifying them takes a long time and is very prone to error.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in manufacturing systems or Information Systems with excellent IT skills, knowledge of databases and an understanding of manufacturing.

5330 – MARKETING PROJECT
This company would like a student to carry out a marketing project to specifically increase its market share in a defined business sector. Duties would include: Identifying and contacting potential clients globally; propose and design marketing plan to attract these new contacts; developing better methods of marketing to include ship owners and managers; evaluate the effectiveness of our web advertising especially through Google with the aid of site statistics.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in marketing or would have an interest in pursuing a career in this area. The student must have good communication and time management skills.

5331 – WEBSITE DESIGN PROJECT
This company would like a student to design a new website for them. This would also include Search Engine Optimisation work. The key stages of the project would involve: Reviewing current website, generating ideas for new company website, presenting these ideas to the directors, creating new website and optimising the new site with search engines.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in IT/Design and would have an interest in pursuing a career in this area. Skills in Flash, Dreamweaver and Indesign also required. You must have good communication and time management skills.

5332 – ENGINEERING PROJECT- DEVELOPMENT OF INSPECTION TOOLS
This company would like a student to explore the potential for replacing a multi-camera CCTV system for the inspection of pipe-work and chambers with low cost ultra sensors. The mechanical aspects of the system are mostly in place and the main aim of the project is the conversion of the system from CCTV to ultra -sonic inspection.
For this placement, the ideal student would have an interest in electronic and software. General Engineering course would be ideal.

5333 – ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PROJECT
This company would like a student to work on a live Electrical Engineering project on the behalf of a client. The process would start from the customer enquiry stage and work through to design, manufacture, installation and testing. In addition to this the company is also looking for a student with ideas on how they can diversify into new markets.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Electrical Engineering with a working knowledge of CAD. This company is looking for a student that might be interested in returning to the company following graduation.

5334 – IT PROJECT
This company would like a student to upload and conduct training for a 'JOOMLA' Open Source Content Management System (CMS), enhancing this for the company whilst developing a secure extranet system for staff to access documents and upload tracking information about their learners. By the end of the 8 weeks the company would like a fully operational website/portal containing an extranet and E-Learning platform.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Computing Science with a working knowledge of PHP and HTML. Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential to the project.

5335 – BESPOKE DATABASE PROJECT
This company would like a student to compile a bespoke database system to produce man pack sheets on behalf of the customer. The system would be developed using MS excel and MS Access. At the end of the 8 week period the company would like a full working system that would reduce the amount of time it takes to process a customer's order. It needs to be user friendly and maintainable.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in IT or Computing Science.

5336 – BUILDING PROJECT MANAGEMENT
This company would like a student to supervise and project manage the refurbishment of a recently purchased industrial unit. The main focus will be the modification and upgrade of the office accommodation, this will need careful planning to minimise business disruption. You will: agree modifications & upgrades; agree timing/Project plan; Project manage works; Project completion.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in the field of Construction. Knowledge of buildings, project management, budgeting and communication are all advantageous.

5337 – CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECT
This company would like a student to carry out a civil engineering project working along side the senior engineers working on design work, calculations, drawings and surveys. At the end of the 8 week period the company would hope that the student had made a significant contribution to the day to day activities of the company. The student would be required to be flexible, working on multiple live projects, visiting sites/clients.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Civil Engineering with an interest in design rather than working on site. It is essential that the student has excellent communication skills.

5338 – INTERNET MARKETING PROJECT
This company would like a student to set up a product focused blog with good search engine linkages. It would be to primarily to help to raise awareness, inform and driving web traffic about the new product in advance of the site going live. To enable us to have dialogue with parents, sectors experts and content contributors. In short using a blog as an online marketing tool.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Marketing with an emphasis on online marketing. The students must be relatively web savvy and familiar with blogs, wiki, podcasts, SNS social networking. This company is looking for a student that might be interested in returning following graduation.

5339 – PROGRAMMING PROJECT
This company would like a student to complete a TPEG Programming project. TPEG technology is already standardised world-wide and recognised as providing the "tool-kit" for delivering all types of Traffic and Travel Information content by any required delivery channel, e.g. Digital Radio (DAB), Internet, Digital TV (DVB), GPRS and Wi-Fi. The company would like a student to work on the C++ or JAVA programming to create the content for a TPEG programme.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Computing Science or IT. Knowledge of JAVA OR C++ would be essential.

5340 – MARKETING PROJECT
This company would like a student to complete marketing plan for the next year, produce a competitor analysis for the market segments, design marketing materials and PR stories to submit to the local press and trade publication, draw up a marketing communications plan and design new corporate branding and stationary. This will also involve market research to establish the market size and competitors market share.
For this placement, the ideal student would be studying toward a degree in Marketing or Business with excellent communication and organisational skills.
