For all of the Job Shop's current listed job vacancies online use the subpages on the menu to the right.  Each subpage lists when it was last updated - for the most up-to-date vacancy information call in to the Job Shop in the Students' Union and look at the vacancy boards, or the most recently added listings to the website can be found in Latest Vacancies.  In order to ensure that our services are available only to Newcastle University students we require that students visit the Job Shop in person with their smart cards in order to collect further details on these vacancies. We will also see students from other UK Universities during the vacation periods only, providing they can show some form of current student ID when they visit us.

Administrative, Clerical and I.T. - These positions include office work, data entry, receptionist work and I.T. work.  Keyboarding skills, computer skills and various I.T. skills are often essential for these jobs.  Employers often only offer one or two positions in these sorts of jobs so vacancies can fill quickly.

Bar and Catering - These positions involve the preparation and serving of food and drink, including work in bars, restaurants, cafes and various event venues that offer catering services.  Previous experience is often preferred but not required, particularly for more basic work.  The rate of pay is typically close to National Minimum Wage.

Call Centre - These positions can involve sales, marketing or customer service roles, which are directed over the telephone from one particular call centre.  A mastery of the English language is essential for these positions.  The rate of pay is often better than National Minimum Wage.

Care Work - Care work involves one-on-one interaction with persons in need of extra personal care, usually because they have a learning or physical disability or suffer from a dehabilitating illness.  These positions usually pay quite well but require a lot of patience and sensitivity.  Care work is often conducted through agencies, and students who apply for these jobs should expect to be subject to standard Criminal Records Bureau disclosure.

Miscellaneous - These jobs vary widely in all manners, but we usually list some particular categories of jobs here including mystery shopping, translation work and cleaning work.

Promotions and Marketing - These positions are centred around promoting and advertising particular businesses, products and events in the Newcastle area.  Experience is typically not required but candidates are often expected to be outgoing and enjoy the art of persuasion.  Hours are often quite varied, allowing students to work these jobs around full university schedules.

Retail - These positions entail working in a shop that sells products directly to customers.  Unless it is for holiday/seasonal work, retail employers usually only offer one or two positions at a time so vacancies can fill quickly, and past experience is often a major advantage.  Rate of pay is typically slightly above National Minimum Wage.

Summer Work  -  These jobs vary widely but are often full time lasting only during the summer vacation period.  These can include working in summer camps and for other organisations that take place elsewhere in the UK or abroad and often provide accommodation.  Summer jobs can be a great experience both personally and for your CV.  Students are encouraged to apply early as these organisations often fill their vacancies well before the summer.

Vacancies Through Agencies - These vacancies are advertised by the Job Shop but are actually listed through various recruitment agencies in Newcastle.  These positions vary widely in job description, rate of pay, and sometimes require students to commute outside of Newcastle.  You do not need to be registered with the Job Shop in order to collect the application details for these vacancies.

Vacancies through Jobcentre Plus - These are a selection of vacancies that may be suitable for students that are being advertised through the Jobcentre Plus in Newcastle.  Most of these positions are either retail or bar/catering work, with a rate of pay close to National Minimum Wage, but there are other sorts of vacancies also.  These are all jobs within the Newcastle/Gateshead area.  You do not need to be registered with the Job Shop in order to collect the application details for these vacancies.
