We are the student employment service based at Newcastle University's Students' Union. We offer a range of services to current undergraduates and postgraduates including advertising hundreds of part-time, temporary and vacation positions in the Newcastle area. The Student Job Shop has been developed in response to the increasing number of students having to seek employment whilst at university. The Job Shop is a Student Employment Service, acting as an information exchange (rather than an employment agency) between students seeking temporary and part-time work, and employers seeking temporary or part-time workers.
We are based on the first floor of the Union Society building and are open in both term time and vacation periods.
The Student Job Shop will be running weekly interview workshops over the summer term for any student that needs to gain additional skills and knowledge of interview skills.
The workshop will be quite informal and will not just consist of us talking to you about interviews. It will involve everyone participating in a mock interview for five minutes in front of the rest of a small group of students. We realise that this may be a bit scary but that’s what interviews are like! Most interviews are conducted by at least two people so we hope that the workshop will help you to get used to being observed by several people.
Aims and Objectives of the workshop:
By the end of the session, participants will have:
• Increased their understanding of what an interview is like.
• Observed themselves and others in an interview situation.
• Have greater awareness of questions they may be asked and their ability to answer them.
• Have experienced asking the questions and observing responses from the employer’s perspective.
You will only have to answer two or three interview questions and each participant will get a turn playing the role of the interviewer and the person being interviewed. We will provide the interview questions for you to ask when you are the interviewer.
The workshops will last for a maximum of one and a half hour’s each and before you come to the workshop you must do a small amount of reading, as the more you prepare the more you will gain from it!
Dates and times of the workshops are as follows: Thursday 15 May from 3 - 4.30pm, Wednesday 21 May from 3 - 4.30pm.
To book your place on one of the above workshops, please email your contact details (name, course, telephone and email address) to job.shop.union@ncl.ac.uk and wait for our reply to confirm your place - don't forget to include the date of the workshop that you want to attend. Hurry, spaces are limited!
Shell Step is a dynamic Work Placement Programme dedicated to providing challenging paid projects for ambitious undergraduates to undertake in small and medium-sized businesses, community organisations and social enterprises during the summer holidays. Not only are these positions paid, but they can provide great work experience related to your degree! If you are a second or penultimate year undergraduate you are eligible to apply. For a current list of these Summer Placement opportunities see our Shell Step Summer Placements page. NOTE: Shell Step is not open to temporary exchange students from overseas universities, or first or final year students.
