Paper-thin walls, parties in the corridor and your first efforts at microwave cooking. The first place you live after leaving home will stay with you forever so make sure you choose somewhere that will give you the best year of your life.
This is where we tell you the truth about first year digs. We can give you all the insider knowledge because we’ve lived there and acquired lots of pearly wisdom. Your first year will no doubt be the most eventful of your time at university and during your first week you’ll pack your mobile phone with numbers of people who live in the same halls as you who you might never see again. But such is the beauty of student digs.

Overall, the difference between catered and self-catered accommodation is pretty obvious. If you think moving away from home is going to be tough enough without having to keep referring to the inevitable copy of Delia’s ‘How to Cook’ book that your mum will sneak in your bag, then the catered option is definitely for you. Alternatively, if you want the freedom to come and go as you please or if you’re a fussy eater then self-catered flats is the best solution.
The University don’t want you to come here and be dumped with all the responsibilities of living independently so catered digs are a good half-way point. There are no bills to deal with, round the clock security and surrogate-mum cleaners. Unfortunately, you do need to do your own washing!
